Reg Sothman (vk4zpp) ---------------------------------------------------------------------* ---------------------------------------------------------------------* Hello, I m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I ve been thinking. With club activities constrained and meetings either suspended or converted to a video stream I thought it might be time to consider how we administer them. I know for a lot of us, business meetings can be a boring fact of life which seem to be the price we pay for the social activities. Once a year, most clubs bring things together with an Annual General Meeting. The AGM is important as it shows the members how different activities went during the year and even how much money was spent and how much raised and what happened with the difference. The other thing is they usually allow an election of office bearers, the committee or the board, who will run the club for another year. These can be some of the most important choices that members make as it becomes a matter of trust that who ever is elected will work for the members and not themselves or another group. The rules of the club may spell out the responsibilities of the various positions in detail or they may be general statements from a set of model rules. Whatever the situation, it is expected that the people who stand for election are prepared to do the job in co-operation with the other committee members, to the best of their capacity. All to often we see that once the formalities have been completed, various people return to the most convenient way of doing things and the spark and enjoyment of their role is put out like a fire in a thunder storm. The freshness, the ideas, the light bulb moments are no longer there and the club starts to wonder why they lose members and no new ones seem to present themselves. There are even instances of glory seekers who see a particular title as an achievement which should be applauded rather than an opportunity to serve their club and its wider community. These people are generally a waste of space as they are no more than drones seeking to find a queen. So what do we look for when we elect our committee. I would say one of the first things is a person with integrity and openness. We need people who will listen and whom we can trust, don t we? Then we need some thoughtfulness and inventiveness, the ability to see an issue and bring new life to it. Then perhaps we should sneak a look at the Amateurs Creed and see how things stack up in light of those ideals. For the candidates, they should do that too and look in the mirror of self reflection and consider how they personally stack up to this creed. If it all works well, we can look forward to growth, success and plenty of good times from our club life. Well, that s what I think. Before I go, remember the ACMA discussion paper is calling for submissions on a 60m allocation for amateurs. If you enjoy HF operating, here is an opportunity to have your say before the end of June. I m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and that s what I think....how about you?
